Patent

While I understand and somewhat support the idea of intellectual property, patents, etc. It's very hard for me to overlook the downsides, which the following quote summarizes. While it refers to a specific example, the first part applies to so many things.

"What cannot be patented cannot generate licensing revenue. What cannot generate licensing revenue cannot be advertised. What is not advertised disappears from public knowledge one generation at a time until a homeowner staring at a grey deck types into a search engine and the first page of results is dominated by sponsored products selling him the chemistry of linseed oil in a branded bottle at 40 times the raw material cost. That is not a conspiracy, that's just a market that rewards complexity and punishes simplicity. The 2$ solution does not get promoted, has no marketing budget. It has no television commercial, so it vanishes."
