point

The smallest conceivable or apparent part of a thing. Sometimes, it is a single position within a whole, such as in space or time. Sometimes synonymous with purpose, principle, or essence in that it is the most distilled representation of the whole.

Example:
The point of a knife or pin.
The point of a lecture.
A point of time within a lecture.
