Value ranking & Vision Statements
It's important to have a vision for our selves and our future to keep us grounded in who we truly wish to be, and to stay focused.
This assessment will help you come up with a well-thought-out vision statement that you can look back to. You can write these out on paper or find a guided assessment in the Stepping Stones app.
- List everything you can think of in the following 3 categories:
-
Values
The things that matter most to you. -
Hobbies & Interests
The things that you enjoy doing, watching, or learning about. -
Dreams & Aspirations
What you hope to do some day. This can be related to a hobby/interest (learning to paint), or a distinct aspect of it (having a public gallery).
-
Rank each of the above in order of importance, as best as you can. Or,
- (optional) write them out in a hierarchical tree starting with the most important. Do they connect in a meaningful way? If not, that's okay. You may also need to add additional values to find the connections. For example, our hobbies can support friendships or simply our own wellbeing, which in turn supports our ability to minister to others.
-
Write or print a vision statement for yourself that incorporates your most important values. This is a document that is usually 1-3 paragraphs in length that says who you are and explains the direction for your life. We don't always know what the future brings, but it should reflect who you are today and where you see yourself in the future.
- (optional) Work together to write a combined vision statement for your family.
-
Log a specific long-term goal that brings about or moves you closer to accomplishing one of your aspirations. Create smaller, manageable sub-goals as well. Tip: Make sure your goals follow the SMART format: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-oriented, and Time-bound.
