Jesus
During His ministry, Jesus revealed a deeper understanding of God's law and lived it out in sacrificial love. Despite being rejected by the people He was sent to redeem, and abandoned by even his close followers, He gave the ultimate sacrifice - His own life. The blood of the Son of God was spilled. At a cosmic level, this is the creation slaying their own creator.
But it was all by God's design. This was plan A. Christ knew He would have to suffer. He willingly gave Himself up so that the blessing of eternal life (the blessing of a perfectly obedient life) could fall to those who were under the curse of death because of sin. He was the only one that could do it.
So, what is the Gospel? The Good News?
Well, it only makes sense when we first recognize the bad news. We have broken our fellowship with God, broken His commandments, and made a mess of the good world that God made. No one's sin is trivial or minor. Our actions carry a catastrophic penalty, death. Sin rules over us and we are under its curse.
The Good News is that Jesus came to the Earth, lived sinless life, and yet took the curse of sin. Because God had accepted Him and death could not have the victory, He rose again from the dead. The Good News is that in Him, we have forgiveness of sins, the blessing of eternal life, and our relationship with God is fully restored. It is the proclamation of a new King.
All that we need to do to have His blood applied to us is repent (turn from sin) and believe. Believe that we are in need of a Savior, believe that He came to earth, died, and rise again to bring that salvation. God does the rest. As promised in the New Covenant, He will give us a new heart and mind, one that desires to do His will. We don't have to get cleaned up - only confess the truth that we are sinners in need of forgiveness, and receive the forgiveness offered freely to all those who are called. This is your call. Today is the day of salvation.
